Investigators said a stolen developer access key let hackers reach 20 categories of data, including names, birth dates and phone numbers.
- On Thursday, investigators revealed a massive data breach at South Korean streaming platform Tving, compromising nearly 40 million user accounts and 361 technical assets including source code.
- An unidentified hacker stole a developer's access key to infiltrate Tving's internal systems; the company failed to report the breach to the Korea Internet & Security Agency within 24 hours of detecting it on May 30.
- Leaked information spans 70 types of data including names, dates of birth, and email addresses, affecting 22.06 million active accounts and 17.37 million inactive or dormant accounts.
- The Personal Information Protection Commission will determine penalties for Tving, which recently posted 6 billion won in operating profit on 140.7 billion won in quarterly sales.
- Investigators warned that compromised data could fuel cybercrimes such as smishing and voice phishing, though Tving has since strengthened security measures with no additional attacks detected.
