NCAA Approves a Single January Transfer Window in College Football
The NCAA will reduce football transfer windows to one 15-day period in January and shorten the coaching change portal window from 30 to 15 days starting in 2026.
- On Tuesday, a key NCAA governing group approved a significant update to the college football transfer portal rules, setting a single transfer period from January 2 to January 16 for the 2025-26 offseason.
- This modification stemmed from long-standing frustration among coaches and athletic directors with frequent player departures, especially after spring practice and coaching changes.
- The new structure eliminates the spring transfer window and replaces the previous two-window system, standardizing the process for both regular and coaching transition periods.
- Athletes now have 15 days to notify their intent to transfer, and those on College Football Playoff teams after January 12 receive five extra days, while Ryan Day commented, 'It doesn't make any sense to me.'
- The change aims to give programs roster stability before spring practice, although some, including the Big Ten, did not support the move and concerns remain about its impact during playoff season.
