Deal Reached on N.C. State Budget, Source Tells Spectrum News 1
The plan keeps state employee raises and tax cuts while dropping a proposed Raleigh baseball stadium funding mechanism, officials said.
North Carolina lawmakers finalized a long-awaited budget agreement late Sunday, aiming for a vote this week to implement the spending plan by the July 1 fiscal deadline.
The North Carolina House of Representatives and Senate necessitated this compromise after more than 1,000 days without a comprehensive budget, relying on stopgap measures since last year.
House Majority Leader Brenden Jones announced the plan includes 13% raises for law enforcement, about 8% for teachers, and $1,750 bonuses for employees earning under $75,000 annually.
Upon passage by the General Assembly, the legislation heads to Democratic Gov. Josh Stein, who has 10 days to sign, veto, or allow the bill to become law without his signature.
The spending plan adjusts sports wagering revenue distribution from 18% to 23% and includes income tax cuts, though it excludes funding for a potential Major League Baseball stadium in Raleigh or Charlotte.
