Bruce Thornton Taken First in Round 2 as Teams Look to Find Gems
Thornton was the 31st pick and will compete for minutes in Houston after a final season at Ohio State with 19.9 points per game.
On Wednesday, the Houston Rockets selected former Ohio State guard Bruce Thornton with the 31st overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, marking the first selection of the second round.
Thornton, the first four-time captain in Ohio State history, departed as the program's all-time leading scorer with 2,164 points after averaging 19.9 points per game as a senior.
The Georgia native attended the draft at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where he told ESPN, "Just to hug my mom, just to say we made it, all the sacrifices were definitely worth it."
Houston acquired the 31st pick from the New York Knicks through a trade, positioning Thornton to compete for rotational playing time in his NBA debut.
Thornton is the first Buckeye selected since 2023, arriving in Houston aiming to "win games and impact winning as much as I possibly can" after his decorated collegiate career.
