N.B. tables bill to create energy advocate to represent residents, small businesses

Energy Minister René Legacy introduced legislation yesterday establishing a consumer advocate position at New Brunswick's energy regulator, aimed at giving residents and small businesses representation during rate-setting decisions.
An independent review of NB Power identified rising rates, aging infrastructure and roughly $6-billion in debt as systemic challenges, prompting the government to mandate reforms earlier this week.
Officials say the advocate would replace the public intervener currently representing broad public interest at the Energy and Utilities Board while also investigating consumer complaints.
Legacy's proposal establishes formal advocacy for households and small businesses in regulatory proceedings, giving New Brunswickers direct representation when the regulator makes decisions affecting their utility bills.
