UNITED STATES, JUL 17 – The Senate vote could eliminate $1.1 billion in funding vital to over 1,500 public radio and TV stations serving rural and tribal communities, threatening their survival.
- This week, the U.S. Senate is expected to vote on rescinding $1.1 billion in CPB funding, affecting the next two years.
- On May 1, President Donald Trump’s early May order mandated CPB to cease funding NPR and PBS, removing roughly half of its budget.
- The tribal media advocate highlighted that Native Public Media supports 59 radio and three television stations serving tribal nations, with about three dozen tribal radio stations at risk of going dark if funding is cut when the fiscal year starts Oct. 1.
- Speaking Wednesday, Sen. Maria Cantwell said, `We are not just putting PBS at risk we are putting millions of Americans who rely on local media for lifesaving information`.
- Looking ahead, public media advocates warn that local stations will bear the brunt of funding cuts, with changes to programming, staff, and facilities expected to happen more gradually over the next year.
