High earners living in state-subsidised rental homes in Helsinki
Thousands of high-income families continue to live in state-subsidised rental housing in Finland, according to a new report by the Ministry of the Environment. The report found that 24,500 households exceed income limits for subsidised housing, despite the original aim of these homes being to support low-income residents. Some earn more than €12,000 per month.
The National Assembly will hold a second reading of the proposals for amendments to the Housing Act and the Act on Financing and Promoting the Construction of Public Rental Housing. The government wants to use legal solutions to ensure more public rental housing and improve accessibility.
Petteri Orpo's government wants to target subsidized rental housing to those with the lowest incomes. The study proposes staggered rent increases if residents' incomes rise.
