‘Nasty’ cyclone set to smash Aussie coast

Cyclone Mitchell is forecast to bring damaging winds up to 205 km/h, heavy rain, and severe flash flooding to Pilbara communities, with evacuations and port closures in effect.

  • On Saturday, Tropical Cyclone Mitchell formed off the Pilbara coast, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting it to reach severe category 3 north of Karratha overnight.
  • Having moved off the coast on Friday, the tropical low reached cyclone intensity just after 8pm about 255km northeast of Port Hedland, drawing energy from warm waters north of WA.
  • The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts damaging gusts up to 205 km/h on the Pilbara coast near Karratha, Dampier and Wickham overnight, with heavy rain up to 130mm in Port Hedland and flood risks in Karratha and Onslow.
  • EmergencyWA has issued watch-and-act warnings from Whim Creek to Mardie and said Onslow may be upgraded on Saturday, while Pilbara Ports closed key ports and evacuation centres opened at Karratha Leisureplex and Onslow Multi Purpose Centre.
  • Meanwhile, the system is expected to weaken by Monday but still bring heavy rainfall and impacts to the west Gascoyne region; more than 400 people may wait days in Darwin from Daly River due to flooding.
