NASCAR said Busch was hospitalized with a severe illness before his death, and no official cause has been released.
NASCAR champion Kyle Busch died Thursday, May 21, 2026, at age 41 after becoming unresponsive while testing a racing simulator in Concord, North Carolina, on Wednesday.
Richard Childress Racing and the family reported he was hospitalized Thursday with a severe illness, forcing his withdrawal from this weekend's Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Known as "Rowdy," Busch holds the NASCAR record with 234 combined national series victories, including 63 Cup Series wins. He secured championships in 2015 and 2019 with Joe Gibbs Racing.
NASCAR, Richard Childress Racing, and the Busch family issued a joint statement calling him a "future Hall of Famer" and "rare talent." Former teammate Jimmie Johnson expressed shock at the loss.
Beyond racing, Busch and his wife, Samantha, founded the Bundle of Joy Fund, which has awarded more than $2 million to support families struggling with infertility.
