NASA unveils close-up pictures of the comet popping by from another star
NASA shared detailed images and data of comet 3I/ATLAS, the third confirmed interstellar visitor, observed by multiple spacecraft and telescopes as it passed near Mars and the sun.
- On November 19, NASA unveiled close-up images of 3I/ATLAS during a livestream at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, showing it as a bright point with a fuzzy halo from Hubble and James Webb telescopes.
- Discovered on July 1 by the ATLAS survey telescope in Chile, 3I/ATLAS is the third confirmed interstellar object, offering a rare chance to study planetary material from another star.
- Measurements indicate comet 3I/ATLAS was imaged from 277 million miles by Hubble to 18 million miles by Mars orbiters, traveling from 137,000 to 153,000 miles per hour near perihelion.
- At the press event, NASA said 3I/ATLAS looks like a comet with no technosignatures, will safely pass 167 million miles from Earth on December 19, and Dr. Nicky Fox said `We love that the world wondered along with us`.
- Scientists plan to observe 3I/ATLAS after its Dec. 19 Earth pass, with further tracking in early December, as Tom Statler said, `It'd be fabulous if we could trace back the incoming trajectory of the solar system & but things are not quite so simple`.

NASA releases new high-res images of 3I/ATLAS after government shutdown delay
Around Oct. 30, the mysterious out-of-this-world 3I/ATLAS reached its closest point in the solar system, roughly 130 million miles away from the Sun. Despite that vast distance, experts in NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office established “right away” that the unusual object was an interstellar comet that did not present a danger for humans on Earth, senior officials said this week. “In fact, it’s at least twice as far away as the distanc…
NASA Unveils Close-Up Photos of Comet Zipping by From Another Star
NASA Unveils Close-Up Photos of Comet Zipping by From Another Star (Maria) The author writes, “NASA unveiled close-up pictures on Wednesday of the interstellar comet that’s making a quick one-and-done tour of the solar system. Discovered over the summer, the comet known as 3I/Atlas is only the third confirmed object to visit our corner of the cosmos from another star. It zipped harmlessly past Mars last month. … It is visible from Earth in the p…
