NASA spacecraft discovers a huge new crater on the moon
- Researchers identified McGetchin crater on the Moon, the largest recently formed impact crater found anywhere in the solar system, in a study published in Science Advances.
- Scientists discovered the crater by comparing before-and-after images from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, which formed in spring 2024 but remained unidentified until October 2025.
- McGetchin measures about 222 meters across and 43 meters deep with a rim rising nearly 8 meters, while the impact released about 65 billion kilojoules of energy causing surface changes exceeding 100 kilometres away.
- The impact was much more powerful than the previous largest recently formed lunar crater, which measured about 70 meters across; models suggest such impacts occur once every 132 years on the Moon.
- Because the Moon lacks an atmosphere, the crater remains well-preserved for future study. A future rover could examine newly exposed rocks and soil at the boundary between ancient highlands and volcanic plains.
