NASA reorganizes to accelerate Moon Base, lunar programs
The agency said the overhaul will streamline decision-making and support a $20 billion lunar base plan over seven years.
On Friday, NASA announced a major agency reorganization to accelerate its lunar exploration program, consolidating key mission directorates and streamlining reporting to NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman.
Divisions over the $24.4 billion budget in Washington prompted the agency's structural changes, as the White House proposed a 23% cut to $18.8 billion while the House Appropriations Committee kept funding flat.
Under the changes, NASA will consolidate operations into a new Human Spaceflight Mission Directorate and Research and Technology Mission Directorate, while naming Carlos Garc as program manager for the Moon Base.
Administrator Isaacman stated the changes will achieve "efficient execution" without job losses or program cancellations, while warning that the United States faces a tight race with China to reach the lunar surface.
The Senate will review NASA spending legislation in June, setting up negotiations with the House later this year to determine final funding levels and the future of lunar exploration plans.
