Artemis II: Nasa's Mega Moon Rocket Arrives at Launch Pad

NASA prepares for a 10-day Artemis II lunar flyby mission by conducting pre-launch tests on the Space Launch System and Orion spacecraft at Kennedy Space Center.

  • On January 17, 2026, NASA rolled the stacked Space Launch System rocket with Orion spacecraft and European Service Module to Launch Pad 39B, reaching the pad by January 18, 2026.
  • To prepare for Artemis II, NASA will rehearse cryogenic fueling and countdown procedures in a two-day wet dress rehearsal scheduled no later than Feb. 2.
  • It was a slow journey, with NASA's crawler-transporter 2 covering 4.2 miles in nearly 12 hours at a top speed of 0.82 mph, moving the stack in a vertical position at 1.3 km/h.
  • The Artemis II crew includes Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen, four astronauts traveling at least 5,000 nautical miles beyond the Moon.
  • NASA has identified launch windows from Feb. 5 to April 2026, with an earliest possible launch on February 6, and can return the SLS and Orion to the Vehicle Assembly Building if issues arise.
