Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to Launch From Florida's Space Coast
NASA says the 2.4-meter telescope will generate 1.4 terabytes of science data per day and survey dark energy, exoplanets and distant galaxies.
On Sunday, August 30, NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is set to launch from Kennedy Space Center on Florida's Space Coast to answer "essential questions in the areas of dark energy, exoplanets and astrophysics."
Equipped with a 2.4-meter mirror and 300-megapixel Wide-Field Instrument, the telescope offers a field of view about 100 times larger than Hubble or Webb, producing 1.4 terabytes of science data daily.
NASA recently selected 118 programs to utilize the telescope, which will observe more than 12% of the night sky—vastly exceeding Hubble's 0.1% coverage—to investigate newborn black holes and stellar populations.
Unlike previous missions, Roman's data becomes available to anyone without a proprietary period as soon as it's processed, enabling collaboration with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and ESA's Euclid.
Astronomer Karoline Gilbert will survey the Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies during the five-year primary mission, while other programs hunt for mysterious LRDs to unlock cosmic origins.
