Nanaimo RCMP urge caution as students head back to school
Officers and Speed Watch volunteers will target 30 km/h school zones and remind drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to follow safety rules.
- With schools reopening on Sept. 8, Nanaimo RCMP will increase traffic enforcement in school zones through officers and Speed Watch volunteers conducting safety initiatives.
- The start of a new school year brings increased traffic as more students walk and cycle to school, according to Insp. Donovan Tait, operations officer with Nanaimo RCMP.
- Motorists must observe 30 km speed limits in school zones from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days, while playground zones posted at 30 km remain enforced from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.
- Police remind residents that e-scooter riders must be at least 16 years old, while e-bike riders must be at least 14, and drivers must stop when a school bus displays flashing red lights.
- Pedestrians should use designated crosswalks and make eye contact with drivers, while drivers dropping off students should follow established traffic flow and avoid blocking residential driveways.
