A mysterious star system just 16 light-years away may be hiding habitable planets
Astronomers have solved a 170-year-old planetary mystery in a nearby two-star system, discovering that a mysterious wobble was caused by stellar activity rather than a giant planet. Although Jupiter-sized worlds have been ruled out in key regions, smaller, potentially habitable planets could still be waiting to be discovered just 16 light-years from Earth.
It has been revealed what caused the mysterious movement of a star system located 16 light-years away, behind which a giant planet was previously suspected.
At a distance of 16 light years from Earth is the star system 70 Serpentine AB, in which it was thought that a huge planet could exist. A new study has refuted this hypothesis, but found the possibility of the existence of small, habitable worlds.
Mysterious Star System 16 Light-Years Away May Host a Habitable Planet
Astronomers studying the nearby binary star system Seventy Ophiuchi AB have found that a long-standing signal once attributed to a Jupiter-sized planet was instead caused by activity on the star’s surface. Led by the University of Michigan, the study rules out certain giant planets in the regions examined while leaving open the possibility of smaller [...]
