Myanmar Complains over Pariah Treatment in ASEAN Bloc
The junta says some member states are maintaining restrictions and unequal treatment, while ASEAN keeps Myanmar out of summits after the 2021 coup.
On Monday, Myanmar claimed 'discriminatory measures' are shutting it out of the 11-country Association of South-east Asian Nations after a summit last week continued to blacklist the country's post-coup leadership.
The Association has shunned Myanmar since 2021, when the military deposed the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. Last month, junta chief Min Aung Hlaing assumed the presidency following a restricted election excluding Suu Kyi's party.
At last week's Philippines summit, Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan stated Myanmar cannot reclaim its seat because 'atrocities towards their own citizens are still occurring.' President Ferdinand Marcos added there has been no progress in Myanmar.
Myanmar's Foreign Ministry rejected these criticisms, claiming 'positive developments' are recognized by most Asean Member States. It accused certain nations of 'interfering in Myanmar's internal affairs through criticism and pressure' regarding the new government.
Countries including Indonesia and Singapore are widely believed to side with Malaysia, while rights activists in Indonesia have filed complaints accusing the junta of genocide against the Rohingya minority. Thailand previously congratulated Min Aung Hlaing on his inauguration.
