Las Vegas Police to Announce Identity of Body Found in Barrel in Lake Mead
Genealogical DNA profiling and a family sample helped identify the victim, while investigators say the decades-old killing remains unsolved.
On Thursday, authorities identified human remains found inside a barrel at Lake Mead in 2022 as Edward Lelburian Jackson, an Arkansas man; officials confirmed Jackson died from a gunshot wound in the early 1980s.
Clark County Coroner Melanie Rouse stated forensic scientists used genealogy profiling to link the remains to Jackson's family, following a composite sketch created in 2023 after initial DNA efforts failed to produce a match.
Known to family as "Uncle Buddy," Jackson lived in California in the 1970s and faced criminal charges in Utah before visiting Arkansas in the early 1980s; police confirmed he had no known ties to Las Vegas.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Homicide Lieutenant Robert Price stated investigators have no evidence linking the killing to organized crime, though the homicide investigation remains active and unsolved.
Receding water levels at the 90-year-old reservoir, caused by drought and excessive water use, exposed the barrel that remained submerged for decades; authorities noted the location was likely hundreds of yards offshore when the body was discarded.
