Delegates from over 140 northern Ontario municipalities seek a permanent federal policy table to improve infrastructure, labor access, and community safety, officials said.
- On Dec. 1, delegates representing over 140 municipalities arrived in Ottawa to present priorities, with Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association and its northeastern counterpart set to meet federal ministers this week.
- Rick Dumas framed the trip as an effort to bring a northern view to federal decisions, saying the delegations want northern policies working with the Northern Policy Institute, while NOMA proposed permanent northern policy table linking municipal, provincial, federal and Indigenous leadership.
- NOMA officials detailed infrastructure and labour priorities when listing their asks, highlighting Trans‑Canada Highway upgrades, foreign‑born workers access, community safety capacity linked to bail and sentencing reforms, natural resources and energy sectors, and policy integration between governments.
- Monday morning, organizers said the itinerary remained being finalized but included meetings with ministerial representatives and ministers, opposition leader Pierre Poilievre, and possible meetings with the prime minister and attendance at question period.
- The delegations stress coordination among all government levels to advance northern priorities, aiming for all levels of government coordination to address shared issues since the federal government as largest funder of provincial governments makes Ottawa engagement strategic, Rick Dumas said.
