'Maine Kiya Kya Hai?' Comedian Masoom Rajwani Detained at Mumbai Protest over IIT Bombay Student Sahil Wakode’s Death
Police detained about 20 to 25 people, including comedian Masoom Rajwani, as protesters demanded an impartial investigation into Sahil Wakode’s death.
On Sunday, October 25, 2026, Mumbai Police detained approximately 20 to 25 people during a candlelight vigil at Chaityabhoomi in Dadar demanding justice for IIT Bombay student Sahil Wakode, who died last month amid allegations of caste-based discrimination.
Wakode was found dead in his IIT Bombay hostel room on September 18; his parents alleged he faced caste-based harassment, prompting police to register a case against Professor Suryanarayana Doolla for abetment of suicide and violations of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act.
Participants, including stand-up comedian Masoom Rajwani, alleged police used force and manhandled women during detentions. Rajwani shared video evidence on Instagram, claiming the police actions were unlawful and involved excessive physical force against protesters.
Amid continuing protests, 84 organizations wrote an open letter to IIT Bombay Director Prof Shireesh Kedare demanding his resignation. Signatories accused the administration of attempting to discredit Wakode and questioned faculty support for Doolla.
Demonstrators demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation probe, describing the death as an alleged 'institutional murder' and seeking representation from marginalized communities in the investigation. Protesters emphasized that protecting the right to dissent remains essential to upholding Ambedkar's values.
