Mum-of-two suffers 'life-ending' injury in rickshaw accident after Westlife concert
The family said the crash left her with life-ending brain injuries and renewed calls for tighter rules on rickshaws and e-scooters.
On Thursday, October 1, Danielle O'Keane, a 37-year-old mother from Newry, passed away in a Dublin hospital following a rickshaw crash. She had been fighting for her life since the accident on Saturday, September 26.
The motorized rickshaw clipped a divider between the cycle lane and main road at North Wall Quay, tossing O'Keane into the path of an oncoming car. She was traveling to meet her husband after attending a Westlife concert at the 3Arena.
A GoFundMe campaign launched by her aunt Jackie Mullan has raised almost £150,000 to support her husband Dave O'Keane and their two sons, Caolán and Cillian. Her family described her as "much loved wife, dear mother, and beloved daughter."
Ashling O'Keane, Danielle's sister-in-law, called for stricter legislation on rickshaws and e-scooters, saying "there's not enough rules around them being on the road." She emphasized the need for better safety protocols and policing of motorized vehicles.
Public tributes describe O'Keane as "the most amazing woman" and "a devoted mum," while supporters noted "the world is kinder than people think" amid the tragedy. Her memory endures through the community's continued support.
