2 Dead, 13 Injured in Shootings Across Boston over July 4 Weekend
Boston homicide detectives are leading the investigation as officers probe several separate shootings and multiple victims were hospitalized, including at least two in critical condition.
Early Sunday, July 5, the Boston Police Department investigated five separate shootings that left 13 victims, including two fatalities, during Independence Day celebrations.
Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox blamed large neighborhood gatherings with illegal fireworks and alcohol for the violence, calling the combination "a bad combination."
Shootings occurred across Roxbury and Dorchester, including incidents on Blue Hill Avenue and George Street where victims suffered life-threatening injuries, police reported.
No arrests have been made as the Boston Police Homicide Unit investigates, while Boston Mayor Michelle Wu described the night as "long and difficult."
Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn called for a public safety summit, arguing "staffing levels are dangerously low" and impacting public safety in every neighborhood.
