Multiple people dead in 'devastating blast' at explosives manufacturer in Tennessee: Sheriff

Secondary explosions hampered rescue efforts at Accurate Energetic Systems, where 18 people remain missing and multiple fatalities confirmed, officials said.

  • At about 7:45 a.m. Friday, a blast tore through Accurate Energetic Systems, LLC near Bucksnort, Tennessee, destroying a building with 19 people missing and feared dead.
  • Founded in 1980, Accurate Energetic Systems makes energetic products for defense and commercial markets and suffered a 2014 blast at its McEwen, Tennessee factory that killed one person and injured three.
  • Residents in Lobelville reported feeling the blast and WTVF-TV aerial footage showed flames, heavy smoke and a debris field after the explosion.
  • Several people were taken to hospitals as agencies worked to contain the site; the Tennessee Department of Transportation closed State Route 230, and the scene was under control Friday afternoon, Grey Collier said.
  • With the cause unknown, federal and state investigators including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and Department of Homeland Security have joined the probe, which could take days.
