MultiCare layoffs announced in south King County and beyond
The nonprofit says rising costs and lower Medicaid funding are driving the cuts, which include 138 positions and six site closures.
Tacoma-Based MultiCare Health System announced on Tuesday it is cutting 138 positions, with layoffs scheduled to take effect between Oct. 27 and Jan. 1, 2027.
Robertson stated the nonprofit lost about $652 million between 2022 and 2025 due to dramatic cost inflation and stagnant revenues, straining the organization's operational capacity.
Six closures will affect locations in Spokane and Spokane Valley, while staffing reductions impact facilities in Tacoma, Puyallup, and King County, including Auburn Medical Center and Tacoma General Hospital.
Robertson noted the network faces further challenges in supply cost management and energy management while pursuing efficiency to remain relevant and competitive in a demanding financial environment.
MultiCare faces a $1.5 billion Medicaid funding reduction over the next eight years, compounded by higher pharmaceutical and labor costs that Robertson cited as ongoing fiscal pressures.
