MTA bus accident injures 8 in the Bronx: officials

Eight people suffered minor injuries after an MTA Bx6 bus lost control and collided with multiple vehicles over several blocks, officials said.

  • The MTA Bx6 bus lost control just before 2 p.m. Monday at 665 E. 163 St. near Cauldwell Avenue after the 63-year-old woman driver applied emergency brakes, FDNY says.
  • Investigators are examining whether human error or a mechanical malfunction caused the crash and are also considering if icy conditions from a recent storm played a role, while police say no criminal activity is suspected and no arrests have been made.
  • The bus struck vehicles for several blocks, finally stopping four blocks after losing control, with a cracked windshield, smashed front door, vehicles hurled onto the curb, and an SUV on the sidewalk with airbags deployed.
  • Emergency responders rushed eight people to hospital, and the FDNY says all were taken to Lincoln Medical with minor injuries and some expected to recover.
  • Witnesses described passengers scrambling and some jumping from the bus, and multiple bystanders said the bus hit six or seven cars before a police car forced it to stop.
