Moyale Border Crossing Closed as Security Risks Escalate Near Kenya-Ethiopia Frontier
The Kenya Red Cross said it is setting up temporary shelter for families, with initial aid reaching 1,000 households.
On Thursday, hundreds of Ethiopians fled into Kenya as gunfire and chaotic scenes erupted in the border town of Moyale, police said. Crossings began Wednesday, with women and children comprising most arrivals.
The influx follows fighting in Moyale, where tensions between leaders of Ethiopia's Oromia and Somali regional states escalated. Gunfire continued on the Ethiopian side of the border into Thursday, according to security briefs.
"We have hundreds of people from Ethiopia, mainly children and women," said Marsabit commissioner Stanley Kamande. Many arrivals are staying with relatives and well-wishers in several Kenyan villages.
Kenya Red Cross official Ibrae John said the organization is assessing displacement needs. "No camp is ready to host those displaced but we shall most definitely work on it," John stated.
Distinct from the northern Tigray conflict, local violence on Thursday shattered windows at the La-Tahsan Hotel and struck a police officer at Moyale's football ground. The settlement straddles the frontier.
