Texas Reclaims No. 1 Spot on U-Haul Growth Index, Led by DFW

Sun Belt states accounted for eight of the top 10 growth spots with Texas leading, while California had the largest net loss for the sixth consecutive year, U-Haul reported.

  • The new U-Haul Growth Index report shows Washington ranked sixth last year, tracking more than 2.5 million one-way moves.
  • Nationally, the Sun Belt's pull remains strong as its year-round warmth and affordable housing help explain migration, with eight of the Top 10 growth states in the region and waves of tech layoffs also influencing moves, U-Haul says.
  • Seth McIntier pointed to jobs and outdoor recreation as draws, noting arrivals grew 6% while departures rose 5%, with gains extending to smaller cities like Anacortes, Bremerton, Redmond and Spokane.
  • Arrivals to Texas increased 3% while departures rose 1%, helping it secure the top growth spot, as California finished last for the sixth year in a row, with the largest net loss, U-Haul says.
  • Oregon posted the biggest single-year climb, Idaho ranked eighth after jumping to 11th last year, and nine of the bottom 10 states were in the north, with California as the lone exception.
