MoU signed for cargo movement by barges over inland waterways

  • On May 6, 2025, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed in New Delhi between Rhenus Logistics India and the agency responsible for overseeing India's inland water transport to initiate barge cargo operations.
  • This agreement follows growth in India’s inland waterways, which expanded operational routes from 24 to 29 and increased cargo volumes from 30 to 133 million tonnes since 2014.
  • Rhenus plans to initiate operations with push boats and 20 flat-bottom barges deployed across key Indian national waterways, including the main river corridors in the north and northeast regions as well as the waterway connecting India and Bangladesh, to facilitate the transport of bulk and break-bulk goods.
  • The barges carry 400 tonnes each and can combine for 1,200 tonnes per trip, with plans to scale the fleet up to 100 vessels, supporting a goal of moving over one million tonnes annually by end-2025.
  • This partnership intends to enhance India’s multimodal logistics, reduce operational costs, leverage global expertise, and supports ongoing infrastructure projects like Jal Marg Vikas with World Bank aid.
