Di Giannantonio Wins Crash-Marred Catalan GP
Di Giannantonio earned his second MotoGP win as two red flags, hospital checks and six tyre-pressure probes disrupted the shortened race.
On Sunday, VR46 Racing's Italian Fabio Di Giannantonio claimed victory at the Catalan Grand Prix after a race red-flagged twice due to multiple crashes. The triumph was overshadowed by serious incidents that sent Alex Marquez and Johann Zarco to the hospital.
Race chaos began on lap 12 when Pedro Acosta's KTM lost power, causing Marquez to crash into the machine. The second restart transformed the original 24-lap event into a 12-lap sprint, then a three-rider pile-up involving Zarco forced a second red flag.
Joan Mir finished second, ahead of Gresini Racing's Fermin Aldeguer, while Acosta crashed on the final lap. Championship contender Jorge Martin also crashed after contact, allowing Di Giannantonio to extend his points advantage.
Reflecting on the danger, Di Giannantonio said, "Today has not been an easy day for everybody. I really hope that Alex is fine." The winner emphasized that riders are ultimately humans at risk.
Final standings remain uncertain as officials investigate six riders for potential tyre pressure violations. This scrutiny adds complexity to results of a grand prix already marred by severe crashes and multiple interruptions.
The Italian Fabio di Giannantonio (Ducati Desmosedici GP26) achieved the victory in a rugged MotoGP race of the Grand Prix of Catalonia, in which Madrid's Manuel González (Kalex) and Murciano Maximo Quiles (KTM) achieved the triumph in their respective categories.Read more]]>
