'She Was a Beautiful Soul': Georgia Mother Fatally Shot in Front of Her Baby Outside Publix
Police say the victim’s 7-month-old daughter was unharmed as investigators charged her former boyfriend with murder with malice.
On May 6, 25-year-old Shyla Cummings was fatally shot in a Stonecrest, Georgia, Publix parking lot. Her former boyfriend, Isiah Tarver, faces a murder with malice charge.
Cummings and Tarver were in a long-term, on-again-off-again relationship, according to family members. Her 7-month-old daughter Sariyah was inside the vehicle during the shooting but remained uninjured.
Responding officers found Tarver at the scene with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and transported him to a nearby hospital in stable condition. He is currently held in the DeKalb County Jail.
Shyla will be laid to rest next week, her family announced. Parents Roston and Shameeka Cummings remembered her as a 'beautiful soul' aspiring to begin nursing school in August.
The National Domestic Violence Hotline remains available 24/7 in more than 170 languages for confidential support. Shameeka Cummings urged parents to "be involved and pay attention" if they suspect their child is experiencing domestic violence.
