Mother of high school student killed months before graduation walks in son's place
His mother joined family and supporters to walk in his place after he was killed about six months before graduation, school officials said.
On Tuesday, Denisha Avery walked at Star Spencer High School's graduation in Spencer, Oklahoma, on behalf of her son, Sabestgen Guyton, who was killed last year before completing his senior year.
Guyton was shot and killed last October near Northeast 34th Street and Spencer Road, approximately six months before his scheduled graduation. A suspect was taken into custody at the end of October.
Remembered as a champion in the classroom, Guyton had a mind for science and math. "The teacher would specifically have him fix the computers and things of the other kids that needed help," Avery said.
With an army of family and supporters, Avery attended the ceremony to honor her son. "My son is supposed to have this on his shoulders, and I have to carry it," she said.
Continuing to honor her son's legacy, Avery shares a message for parents about cherishing their children. Family and friends declare, "Long live Sabestgen," keeping his memory alive in Spencer.
