Mother of Henry Nowak's killer jailed for assisting an offender
Kiran Kaur was found guilty of helping conceal the weapon after jurors also convicted her son of murder and carrying a knife in public.
- Kiran Kaur, 53, was sentenced to three years in prison at Southampton Crown Court for assisting an offender by removing the murder weapon from the scene of 18-year-old finance student Henry Nowak's killing.
- Her son, Digwa, received a life sentence last month with a 21-year minimum for stabbing Nowak with a 21cm ceremonial knife, having falsely claimed the victim racially abused him.
- Sentencing Kaur, Judge William Mousley KC said, "A responsible parent would have challenged their son over their actions," but instead she concealed the weapon in her son's bedroom among other weapons.
- Body-Worn camera footage showed Nowak pleading "I've been stabbed" and "I can't breathe" while handcuffed by police as he lay dying from two stab wounds to his legs and a fatal heart wound.
- The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating how officers handled the case, with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announcing last month that the inquiry will report within three months after reviewing body-worn video and meeting the family.
