- A multiagency inquiry over decades involved the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration and Federal Bureau of Investigation, tracing the order to a Nov. 11, 2001 DWI citation and a Dec. 27, 2001 failure-to-appear warrant.
- At her request, authorities are not releasing Smith's location, and family members including daughter Amanda and relative Barbara Byrd said she is safe.
- Rockingham County said a national database entry helped detectives locate Smith, Rockingham County District Attorney Katie Gregg said there is insufficient evidence to charge anyone, and Sheriff Sam Page said Smith left due to ongoing domestic issues with no foul play found.
