Pipe bomb 'pushed through letterbox' of Belfast home with mother and children inside
Police say a pipe bomb caused damage and forced evacuations, while no one was injured and inquiries are ongoing.
On Friday, October 16, 2026, a pipe bomb exploded after being pushed through a letterbox on Stanhope Street in North Belfast at approximately 3:00 AM, triggering a security alert and prompting local evacuations.
Nicola Nugent and her four children escaped their home uninjured after the explosion damaged the hallway and front door, fleeing the smoke-filled property as emergency services arrived.
Detective Sergeant Stevenson confirmed the device "exploded fully," while Sinn Féin councillor JJ Magee described the incident as a "reckless and dangerous" pipe bomb attack as police analyzed the remnants.
Residents evacuated from the area have returned to their homes after ammunition technical officers cleared the scene and lifted cordons, with authorities thanking the community for their patience.
Nugent "definitely, 100%" believes the attack was a case of mistaken identity, and police urge anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage to call 101, quoting reference number 141 16/10/26.
