Most commonly seen birds in Montana
Project FeederWatch identifies common bird species by analyzing data collected at feeders across Canada and various states, with recent findings highlighting trends in Tennessee and Virginia.
Founded in 1976 by Erica Dunn and the Long Point Bird Observatory in Ontario, the project partnered with the Cornell Lab of Ornithology after 10 years to scale across the U.S. and Canada.
Between Apr. 18 and Apr. 30, researchers collected data at 331 count sites in Virginia and 96 count sites in Tennessee to rank bird species by site visit frequency.
Scientists use this Data to understand trends in bird populations, calculating rankings based on site visits and average group sizes observed at feeders.
Interested individuals can learn more about becoming a FeederWatcher to contribute to this citizen science project, which now includes over 20,000 participants monitoring avian health.
