Vancouver Aquarium Says Goodbye to Beloved Sloth Hurricane, Dead at 29
The aquarium said Hurricane received specialized geriatric care and was able to participate in her own healthcare through cooperative training.
On Tuesday, the Vancouver Aquarium announced that Hurricane, its "most beloved" two-toed sloth, passed away at 29, confirming the news on its Instagram page.
Born at the Salisbury Zoological Park in Maryland, Hurricane arrived in Vancouver in 1999 and had been receiving "specialized geriatric care" from the veterinary team prior to her death.
Through cooperative training, Hurricane "was able to participate in her own healthcare," allowing veterinarians to collect blood samples and ultrasound measurements that guided her care.
Todd Hauptman said Hurricane had a special way of connecting with guests, and her daily interactions created "meaningful moments" for countless staff and visitors over the years.
The Vancouver Aquarium will have more information in the coming weeks, though Hauptman said he cannot confirm whether another sloth will replace Hurricane.
