Most afterschool programs offer STEM learning, but rural students lack access
A recent report found rural families are less likely to access afterschool STEM learning because programs are farther away and harder to staff.
Rural students face limited access to afterschool STEM programs, according to a recent report. These programs include science, technology, engineering, and math activities, yet many students in remote areas remain underserved.
While urban areas offer more frequent activities, rural families struggle to find consistent opportunities. This disparity in educational support creates a significant gap for youth living in remote locations.
The report found that 96 percent of urban households have access to STEM learning, whereas rural participation rates remain significantly lower. These findings highlight the difficulty of providing consistent programming.
"This is," said Anita Krishnamurthi, the Afterschool Alliance Senior Vice President of STEM, noting that rural youth currently lack the necessary infrastructure to participate fully in these essential programs.
Expanding these programs remains a priority, as experts emphasize that reliable access to STEM education is vital for student development. The organization aims to increase opportunities for youth nationwide.
