Mosquito in Norfolk tests positive for West Nile Virus

NORFOLK, VIRGINIA, JUL 22 – Norfolk health officials began mosquito control efforts after detecting West Nile virus in a mosquito sample, with 1 in 150 infected individuals developing severe illness, the health department said.

  • Mosquitoes collected in Anaheim and Garden Grove have tested positive for West Nile virus, marking the first confirmed cases in Orange County this year, according to the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District.
  • A dead bird found in Garden Grove also tested positive for West Nile virus, indicating that the virus is circulating in the community, said Amber Semrow, Director of Scientific and Technical Services at OCMVCD.
  • No human cases have been reported in Orange County so far this year; however, warm summer conditions are favorable for virus transmission.
  • OCMVCD is increasing mosquito surveillance and control and urging residents to dump standing water, clean bird baths, and wear mosquito repellent containing DEET or other effective ingredients.
