Morrisons Trials New Trolley that Makes Shoplifting Impossible
The carts scan items, track totals in real time and apply Morrisons More offers as the supermarket tests wider rollout.
Morrisons introduced AI-powered "Caper Carts" at its Riversway store in Preston, Lancashire, marking the first UK trial of the technology. The carts use cameras, sensors, and built-in scales to automatically identify products and track spending in real-time.
Supplied by US technology company Instacart, the carts are already deployed by major retailers across the United States, including Kroger, Aldi, Coles, and Sprouts. This marks the technology's first supermarket trial in the UK.
The system integrates with Morrisons More cards to apply discounts while tracking a running total. Anti-theft technology reportedly flashes red to alert staff if customers attempt to leave without paying, and generates a barcode for self-checkout.
Skepticism emerged among shoppers regarding theft and vandalism risks. One customer dubbed them "Fancy AI trolleys," while another commented they would be "stolen, broken, in the canal in a few days."
Morrisons Productivity Director Gordon Macpherson stated the Preston trial will "gauge customer reaction before any wider rollout" across the store network. The supermarket also announced this week it will install stoma-friendly toilets in all 497 full-sized stores with accessible bathrooms.
