Driver Took Snapchat Selfies Moments Before Killing Cyclist
Investigators said Isherwood used Snapchat and Instagram while driving, and Dawson failed to stop after the collision that killed James Lawley.
On Monday, Preston Crown Court sentenced two drivers for the death of 81-year-old cyclist James Lawley, who was killed in a September 2024 collision in Morecambe.
Matthew Isherwood, driving a black Seat Altea, initially struck Lawley's tricycle, causing him to fall into the road; Kevin Dawson then ran over him in a silver Mercedes C200 and failed to stop.
Data retrieved from Isherwood's phone revealed he used his mobile phone on multiple occasions during his four-minute journey, taking a selfie on Snapchat and browsing Instagram seconds before impact.
Isherwood received five years and two months in prison, while Dawson was handed an eight-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to causing death by careless driving.
Detective Sergeant Matt Davidson of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said "no sentence will ever be enough to make up for the loss of his life," but welcomed the drivers' accountability.
