More Oregonians can now register to vote online
Oregon now allows all eligible residents to register online using their Social Security number and signature, complying with House Bill 4133 to simplify voter registration.
- On Tuesday, Oregon Secretary of State Tobias Read announced all eligible residents can register to vote online without a driver’s license using a secure form on OregonVotes.gov and sos.oregon.gov.
- House Bill 4133, enacted in 2022, required an electronic voter registration system allowing qualified individuals with a Social Security number to register by Jan. 1, 2026, expanding beyond DMV-verified identities.
- Applicants are asked to provide name, address, date of birth, last four digits of Social Security number, and an uploaded electronic signature image, while elections staff and county clerks verify and approve registrations.
- By aligning with most states, the change modernizes registration and reduces barriers for eligible voters who do not drive or lack ID, the state election officials said.
- Republicans including State Rep. Ed Diehl argued House Bill 4133 weakens safeguards, while county clerks warned the rollout near the Jan. 1, 2026 deadline raises verification and third-party interface concerns.
