Pensioners Could Miss Out on £300 Winter Fuel Payment Despite Being the Right Age
Some pensioners could lose up to £300 after HMRC recovers Winter Fuel Payments from incomes above £35,000, officials said.
Winter Fuel Payment letters are arriving soon, warning pensioners that income above £35,000 triggers HMRC recovery. Under Government rules, recipients could see funds arrive in their bank account only to have them recovered later through the tax system.
Personal Finance Expert Joe Lytwyn warned that age is only one eligibility factor; circumstances during the qualifying week and living location can also affect entitlement. Living in a care home does not automatically exclude someone from receiving the benefit.
The Winter Fuel Payment ranges from £100 to £300 depending on individual circumstances. HMRC usually recovers the payment through a tax-code adjustment or Self Assessment, potentially reducing take-home income for those exceeding the threshold.
Lytwyn warned that recipients repaying multiple Winter Fuel Payments simultaneously face compounded pressure. "The effect will vary according to the amounts involved and the repayment arrangements, but overlapping deductions could put additional pressure on a monthly budget," he said.
Pensioners should verify whether HMRC recovery applies before finalizing winter budgets. "Understanding whether repayment applies could help them avoid building their winter budget around money they may later have to return," Lytwyn said.
