More evidence soon to be published of LDS Church founder Joseph Smith's polygamy
A surreptitiously circulated copy of William Clayton’s diaries has revived questions about Joseph Smith’s marriages, which historians say included more than 30 wives.
- William Clayton's diaries, kept while serving as secretary to Joseph Smith in Nauvoo, Illinois, are circulating ahead of an annotated publication by Yale University Press next year.
- A new generation of so-called polygamy deniers, many of them Latter-day Saints, claim there is "no evidence" of Smith's marriages to multiple women beyond wife Emma Hale Smith.
- Clayton's July 12, 1843, account of Smith dictating Doctrine and Covenants Section 132 outlines theological justifications for "plural marriage," while Church History Department director Matthew McBride noted later statements by some wives "used 19th-century euphemisms."
- The Utah church acknowledged in an official essay that "Joseph Smith married multiple wives," the youngest of whom was 14; historians inside the Community of Christ and the larger Utah church believed the case was settled.
- "Today's Latter-day Saints have grown up in a monogamous world," historian Matthew Bowman said, noting that denials often stem from difficulty squaring a charismatic prophet with a practice they find repellant.
