Protest Against Police Scheduled in Montreal
Protesters said the suspension of two officers shows a pattern of abuse and pressed city leaders for stronger oversight.
On Saturday, October 24, 2026, demonstrators rallied in front of Montreal's Station 21 to denounce alleged police misconduct involving unhoused people, marching through downtown to demand accountability.
This unrest follows the August suspension of two officers at Station 21 for humiliating unhoused and racialized people, with one investigated for allegedly urinating on homeless people over an 18-month period.
Ted Rutland, a professor of social geography and urban studies specializing in policing, called the paid suspensions a "vacation," while protesters carried signs with the slogan "La Police Nous Pisse Dessus, Nous, On Pisse Sur la Police."
Seeking accountability, the Official Opposition filed a motion to summon Police Chief Fady Dagher to City Hall, which Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada amended to a meeting of mayors citing ongoing internal investigations.
Advocates argue for defunding the Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal to invest in social resources, suggesting civilian responses to 911 calls would better support unhoused people.
