Montana Republican, Democratic leaders both say they had successes in 2026 elections
Democrats flipped four legislative seats and won a U.S. House race, but Republicans kept control of both chambers and the Senate seat.
On Tuesday, Democrat Sam Forstag won Montana's western congressional district seat, marking the state's first Democratic congressional victory since 2018. Republicans secured the U.S. Senate and eastern House seat.
Republican state party chair Art Wittich said Republicans faced a tough mid-term election nationwide but maintained power by running on results. Voters rewarded Kurt Alme and U.S. Rep. Troy Downing for disciplined campaigns.
Democrats flipped two House and two Senate seats in the Montana Legislature, including victories by Democrat Paula Koch and Democrat Steve Keller. Republicans defended tossup races in Great Falls and Billings, securing 56 House and 30 Senate seats.
Emily Marburger, Montana Democratic Party executive director, said Forstag's win showed Democrats can succeed by relating to voters. "Voters are going to continue to be impressed with Forstag once he gets into office," she stated.
Party caucuses will convene at the State Capitol next week to elect leadership for the 2027 legislative session. Republicans will hold 30 Senate seats and 56 House seats when the session begins in January.
