'Fresh Reimagining' of Iconic Series Monarch of the Glen, with a New Twist
The new series follows Isla Campbell and her brother as they try to save a Highland estate facing a £1 million debt and a bank closure.
- Channel 5 is officially reviving the iconic Scottish drama Monarch of the Glen, with the new series produced by Ecosse Films and Masterpiece PBS as a fresh reimagining of the show that originally aired between 2000 and 2005.
- Loosely based on the Highland Novels by Sir Compton Mackenzie, the original show pulled in more than 8 million viewers at its peak, establishing strong audience demand for the return of the beloved series.
- Writer Jeremy Brock, who created and is executive producing the reboot, said, "When I was offered the chance to re-imagine Monarch of the Glen, I leapt at it," with filming scheduled for Scotland and Northern Ireland later this year.
- The revival joins other classic UK shows being reimagined, including the Scottish drama Balamory, while ITV is rebooting the crime drama Dalziel and Pascoe, originally aired on the BBC from 1996 to 2007.
- Executive Producer Robert Bernstein said, "Hope and joy are a currency in short supply right now," adding the show will reach a new generation, though Channel 5 has not yet announced an entirely new cast.
