'Keep Going' - Bodycam Captures Astonishing Moment Officer Asks Stranger for a Lift
The driver helped an officer catch Jacob Roberts after he abandoned a van in a dangerous pursuit that ended with a 14-month jail term.
- After flagging down a woman in a Nissan Micra, PC Peter Kerswell of South Wales Police caught suspect Jacob Roberts during a pursuit in Abercwmboi, Rhondda Cynon Taf. The driver told the officer to "get in" while asking "Where to?" as they gave chase.
- Roberts fled from South Wales Police in his van after officers smelled cannabis, driving erratically through Abercwmboi, mounting pavements and crashing into parked cars, a building, and a police vehicle before abandoning his van to escape on foot.
- Using the lift provided by the driver, Kerswell caught up to Roberts, jumped out of the car, and deployed his taser to arrest the suspect. Officers also found two cannabis cigarettes on him during the search.
- At Merthyr Crown Court, Judge Jeremy Jenkins jailed Roberts for 14 months and banned him from driving for three years and seven months. Jenkins stated: "Only custodial sentences can be justified for this type of behaviour."
- Judge Jenkins warned Roberts that he was a "very very serious accident waiting to happen," urging him to "come to your senses." Kerswell noted it was fortunate no one was injured and hoped the sentence would give Roberts time to reflect.
