Explosions and Fires After Ship Collision Off East Yorkshire Shown to Court
Captain Vladimir Motin faces charges after allegedly failing to act despite knowing the tanker was on a collision course for over 30 minutes, causing one crewman's death.
- Vladimir Motin, 59, is on trial charged with the gross negligence manslaughter of Mark Pernia, 38, whose body has not been found, after Motin's vessel, the Solong, collided with the anchored oil tanker Stena Immaculate in the North Sea.
- The collision caused both ships to be engulfed in a huge blaze as the Stena Immaculate was carrying large quantities of aviation fuel that leaked out.
- Prosecutor Tom Little said Motin did "absolutely nothing" to prevent the collision despite being aware of the Stena Immaculate from at least 9 nautical miles away on the Solong's radar.
