Increased Speed Limits in Missouri: Here’s Where
MoDOT said the changes follow a detailed safety review and will affect eight segments after crews replace signs this fall.
On Wednesday, the Missouri Department of Transportation announced speed limits will increase to 75 mph on rural segments of I-29, I-35, I-49, and I-55 following a comprehensive review of eligible interstate corridors.
Governor Mike Kehoe signed a new law permitting the department to raise rural highway speeds; MoDOT Director Ed Hassinger stated the decision followed detailed studies of traffic volumes, terrain, and crash history.
MoDOT will spend approximately $50,000 to replace signs this fall, though I-44 and I-70 remain excluded from increases; Hassinger cited heavy traffic, ongoing construction on I-70, and hilly terrain on I-44 as safety concerns.
Drivers must continue obeying posted speed limits until crews install new signs, MoDOT said, while the department will monitor crash data and "may adjust the speed limit back to 70 miles per hour as necessary."
Missouri State Highway Patrol Colonel Michael Turner urged motorists to prioritize safety, noting highways were not built for 80+ mph traffic and emphasizing the 75-mph limit requires drivers to adjust for road conditions.
