Moderna Gets $50 Million to Develop mRNA Ebola Vaccine Against Bundibugyo
CEPI said the candidates could reach clinical trials in a few months as the outbreak tops 1,100 suspected cases, officials said.
- On Monday, Moderna and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations announced an expanded partnership to accelerate development of an investigational vaccine against Ebola Bundibugyo.
- The outbreak has caused 282 confirmed cases, including 42 deaths, and around 1,100 suspected cases in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, with the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and World Health Organization declaring it a public health emergency.
- CEPI committed up to $50 million to support preclinical development and early clinical testing of Moderna's candidate, which uses the same mRNA platform that enabled rapid vaccine production during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Separately, global vaccine alliance Gavi committed up to $50 million to the response, while the World Bank's Pandemic Fund announced up to $220.6 million in grants to support outbreak control efforts.
- CEPI CEO Richard Hatchett emphasized urgency, stating, "Every day counts in the race against this deadly disease," while cautioning that unpredictable development cycles and regional security concerns complicate trials.
